The hall closet is often the "dumping ground" of a typical household. Not only do coats, cleaning accessories, and sports equipment go into this small space but also items that do not seem to belong anyplace else. As a result, it is often cluttered and messy beyond belief! Taking the time to properly organize this neglected closet will be well worth the effort when things are easily accessible for the first time.
1. Toss the Junk
Closet Shelving Units
Since we have established that a hall closet is the resting place for items that have no place, the first thing that must be done is to get two large trash bags and pull everything out. Begin sorting through the items. The first bag is the actual garbage bag. The second bag should be designated items to give away. Outgrown or outdated clothing and shoes, unwanted toys and games, sporting equipment that has been collecting dust, or any other miscellaneous items that are no longer used should go in the charity bag. The rest of the things that are being kept should be put aside for the time being.
2. Evaluate All Areas of the Closet
Now that the closet has been emptied, evaluate what must be done to make the best use of space. The walls, floor, and closet door can all be used for storage. Does the hall closet have shelving? If not, install several shelves first of all. Second, the floor is the ideal place for storing shoes, but instead of merely lining them up on the floor, consider stackable shoe storage. More pairs can be stored in less space. Next, the back of the closet door is a great option that most people never consider. Adding hooks for shopping bags, purses, aprons or other items is ideal. Another idea to consider is adding hanging storage pockets to the rod. This is a good way to store scarves, hats, jewelry or other accessories.
3. Put Items Back
After the hall closet has been de-cluttered, and organizers and storage units have been added, you can now put items back into the closet. It should be a gratifying experience to see your hard work and organization pay off.
