When you need shelving in your home, the first thing that you will think of is going out to buy you're a few shelves to put up, you do not think about the fact that you can build heavy duty wood shelves yourself. Well, you can and the process is not that hard and not that long, in fact, you will be able to build heavy duty wood shelves in less than a day.
Now, the first part of the process is not actually building the shelving. You will need to figure out where you are going to use the shelving and what you are going to put on it. This will help you figure out what type of wood to use. If you are going to make a sort of mantelpiece to put a few pictures on, then you will not need a thick piece of wood.
Closet Shelving Units
However, if you are going to make a shelf that is going to go in your living room or TV room for your HDTV, then you have to have a heavy duty unit, because you do not want that thing breaking when you lay the new flat screen on it, because you will be costing yourself a lot of money.
Now, the first thing that you have to do is know the style you are going for. Okay, you may be thinking "style, what style? It is wood", but you get many types of wood. Dark and light, new and old, oak and pine are just a few of them, and each blend gives you a different look and feel. Like if you are going to go with pine, it is not a good idea to stain it too dark.
This is because most people know what pine looks like because of its pattern, and it is a very light wood. So, you do not want to stain pine too dark because it going to look cheap. If you go with pine and you do not want people to know that it is pine, be sure to paint it with a solid color to hide the wood. Now, if you build heavy duty shelves for a living you will probably not like that idea, but to each his/her own.
Once you have chosen the wood you are going to use, storage shelf, garage or closet, you can move on to finding out the size of the wood you need. You will need to make sure that you use a tape measure for this. Line out the size of the storage you need in the space you are going to be installing it, then measure the space with the tape measure.
Once you have the measurements you can go out and buy the woods you need in the sizes you need it. Make sure that you get the wood precut so that you do not need to waste time cutting wood, which could take all afternoon, and you do not want that is you want to build heavy duty wood shelve quickly.
